Unit 1 - Good Habits
This unit is about getting back into writing. We have been focusing on writing at least 3 page stories that center around one main idea. This year we are using pens to write so that we do not waste our time with erasing and sharpening pencils. We are off to a really good start.
September 25 - sight word list:
How to Do the Homework Activities
- Say the words 3 times each – have your child cut up one set of the sight word flashcards and go through them 3 times each. If you notice that they are having a hard time remembering one of the words put it on the fridge and have them say the word every night.
- Go Fish – cut up both sets of flash cards. Put them into one pile and shuffle them up. Pass out 4 cards to each player. Put the remaining cards face down on the table and spread them out. The youngest player goes first. They ask one of the other players if they have a card with a word on it that they already have in their hand. For example, if I have the card ‘it’ in my hand I will ask one of the other players for the ‘it’ card. If they have the card they give it to me and I put my match down on the table. If they do not have the card they tell me “Go Fish”. I then pick one of the cards that is lying face down on the table. Then the next player goes. Everybody keeps getting a turn until one person is out of cards. Then you count your matches on the table. The player with the most matches wins the game.
- Write the word 3 times – have your child take the sight words for the week and write them three times each.
- Tic-Tac-Toe – Pull out the tic-tac-toe board that is in your child’s homework packet. Make sure that you have 2 different kinds of markers that can be used to mark a space on the board. Good examples of markers would be dimes & pennies, 2 different colored poker chips, or 2 different kinds of cereal. This game can only be played by 2 players. The youngest player goes first. That player says the word of the spot that they wish to put their marker on first. If they get it correct they get to put one of their markers on that spot. If they do not say the word correct they lose their turn. Then the next player goes. The player that gets 3 in a row, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally wins the game.
- Fill in the blank – your child has a homework paper that has sentences on it and a blank in each sentence. They need to use the words in the word bank on that paper to help them fill in the blank correctly.
- Memory – cut up both sets of flashcards. Lay all the cards face down on the table. The first player turns over 2 cards. If the word matches then they must say the word on the card to get to keep the match and then turn over 2 more cards to see if they match. If they do not get a match then they turn the cards back over and the next player gets to go. When all the cards have been matched up, each player needs to count how many matches that they have. The player with the most matches wins.
- I hope that you have a fun time doing these homework activities with your child.
- If your child completes a homework assignment where they had to write please make sure that the assignment gets turned into the teacher by Friday.
