Unit 1 - Good Habits
This unit deals with getting the students back into the routine of readers workshop. We have been working on stamina. We are currently up to reading 15 minutes by ourselves at a time. We have also been practicing how to work with a partner when we read.
Unit 2 - Strategies to decode a word (begins Oct. 1)
This unit will cover strategies that your child should be using when they come to a word that they do not know. They can sound out the whole word, use the pictures, cover up part of the word, look for words within a big word that they already know, skip the word and then come back, and try to figure out what would make sense. A good reader uses many different strategies to help them figure out a word. If you notice that your child is just sounding out the word and then giving up when they can not figure out the word have them try to start using another strategy. Try to have them lean one other strategy at a time. If you try to make them use all the strategies and they are not comfortable with that they will become frustrated and want to give up.
